Pipsland
A learning island for Barbadian primary school children. Pip reads every question aloud while children learn maths, English and science at their own class level, in the browser.
Pipsland is a learning island for primary school children in Barbados. Children explore a bright island with Pip, a friendly guide who reads every question aloud, and work through maths, English and science at their own class level, from Reception to Class 4. It runs in the browser on any tablet or computer, with nothing to install.
Technical Architecture
The game is built with Godot and exported for the web, so the same project runs on iPad, Mac, Android and the browser. A Rust server (Axum and SQLite) holds family accounts, children's progress, payments and analytics. The game engine and about 14,000 voice clips download in the background and stay cached on the device, so after the first visit the island opens in seconds.
Key Features
- Learning at the Right Level: Hundreds of skills across maths, English and science, set to each child's class and adjusted as they learn
- Pip Reads Aloud: Every question, story and instruction is voiced, so children who are still learning to read can play on their own
- Hands-On Science Labs: Interactive experiments on the water cycle, hurricanes, plants and seeds that children control themselves
- Stories with Questions: Short stories read aloud, followed by comprehension questions
- Family Accounts: Parents add their children, follow a play calendar and a progress report for each child, and manage access in one place
- Free Trial of the Full Game: Each child gets a trial of the real game, and their progress carries on when the family subscribes
- Local Payments: Barbadian payment options, including BimPay and mMoney
Showcase for Parents
A public showcase page lets parents try sample activities before they sign up: a story read aloud with its questions, a reading game, a maths activity, and the science labs in free play.
Business Impact
Pipsland gives Barbadian families a daily, curriculum-based learning habit that children want to come back to. Built-in analytics follow the full journey, from the first visit to the showcase to a paying family, and flag children who start to slip so families can be helped before they stop.
